08 — From the journal

The parliament on the point.

Empires moved their capitals into palaces. The Faroes kept theirs in a row of red sheds on a rock.

Around the year 825, Norse settlers picked a low peninsula splitting Tórshavn’s harbour in two and made it their ting — the open-air assembly where law was spoken. The parliament has met in Tórshavn ever since, which puts Tinganes in the smallest handful of places on earth where a legislature has sat for a thousand years.

Today the prime minister’s office is a red timber building with a turf roof that a tourist can walk right past. No fences, no guards to speak of — just a brass plate and the smell of tar and sea. The old town behind it — Á Reyni — is a knot of black-tarred houses where people still live behind the museum-piece facades.

Climb to Skansin, the star fort raised in 1580 after pirate raids, for the harbour view: red lighthouse, cathedral spire, and the ferry to Nólsoy threading out between them.
