01 — Atmosphere

Streymoy’s north-west corner drops several hundred metres straight into the Atlantic. Summer boat tours from Vestmanna thread the sea stacks and enter the grottos beneath nesting colonies.

  • 01The boat goes quiet inside the grottos — then the birds take over
  • 02Guillemots, kittiwakes, fulmars and puffins share the walls
  • 03Helmets on — the cliffs shed pebbles with the gusts
  • 04Sea caves the Vikings are said to have hidden boats in

A field guide
for the light.

Overcast — flat light keeps detail in white birds and black rock. Shoot up from the waterline to stack the ledges; a passenger in frame gives the walls their scale.

08 — From the journal

Shelving for a hundred thousand birds.

The cliff is an apartment block with no walls, and every tenant is screaming.

From the water, the north-west coast of Streymoy is vertical geology with vertical biology on top: guillemots on the barest shelves, kittiwakes plastered to overhangs, puffins in the turf attics. The boat cuts its engine beneath them and the sound arrives — tens of thousands of arguments conducted at once.

The grottos are the tour’s second act. The skipper eases the bow between walls a metre wider than the boat, swell breathing beneath, and the colonies’ noise gives way to dripping basalt dark. Then back out, blinking, into bird weather.
